Google Is Removing Reviews – Here’s What You Need to Know

If you’ve logged into your Google Business Profile recently and noticed missing reviews, you’re not alone. Google has tightened its review policy enforcement again, and many businesses have seen reviews removed overnight.

What’s triggering this?

Google is flagging unusual spikes in review activity and incentivized reviews. For example, if a business typically receives two reviews per month and suddenly gains 40+ in a weekend, that can raise concerns. Offering discounts, gifts, or rewards in exchange for 5-star reviews is also against Google’s guidelines.

Google’s goal is simple: authentic, organic feedback — not manufactured hype.

Here’s how to build reviews the right way (and stay compliant):

✔ Be Consistent Google puts heavy weight on reviews from the past 90 days. You could have hundreds of total reviews, but if none are recent, they won’t help much. I recommend aiming for at least one new review per week to maintain steady growth.

✔ Encourage Detailed Feedback When customers describe their experience in detail, they naturally mention your services, location, and relevant keywords — all of which help your visibility in search results. Photos included in reviews are even better.

✔ Automate the Process Instead of manually asking or relying on memory, set up a system that automatically requests reviews at the right time. Automation removes the awkwardness and creates a steady, compliant flow of new feedback.

At the end of the day, Google isn’t trying to penalize good businesses — it’s trying to eliminate manipulation. If you focus on consistent growth, authentic reviews, and a smart strategy, you’ll stay protected and continue improving your rankings.

Reviews remain one of the strongest ranking factors for Google Maps and local search — but the strategy must be sustainable.
